Editorial Guidelines

Caves Australia welcomes a diversity of articles and photographs.

Bear in mind that Caves Australia is dedicated to documenting and explaining speleology to a national and international audience. Technical detail is vital, but do try to omit descriptions of what you had for lunch.

Essential notes

To ensure trouble-free communications please provide the following with each contribution.

  • Full name of author and/or photographer
  • Contact phone number
  • Email address

TEXT

All text files are acceptable, but the Editor will be eternally grateful if they arrive in a plain text format pasted into (not as an attachment) an email addressed to: editor@cavesaustralia.com

Please do not embed photographs in a Word or Pages document. They must be sent separately as attachments in the email containing your text.

Please note: Articles will be edited for clarity, grammar, punctuation, number and citation styles.

You may be allowed one exclamation point every 100,000 words if the sub-editors are not in a particularly vicious frame of mind at the time the article is received.

Avoid double spaces following a full stop.

The editors will interpolate sub-headings to break up long passages of text.

PHOTOGRAPHS

Please submit photographs as JPEG, TIFF or PNG files. They should be no bigger than 1500px in height or width.

Please do not embed photographs in a Word or Pages document. They must be sent separately as attachments in the email containing your text.

All titles must include the photographer’s name and a unique identifier — e.g:

  • Joe Bloggs-101
  • Joe Bloggs-102, etc.

Captions must be included for all images in a separate text file and refer to the title number of each photograph — e.g.

  • 101: Exit Cave entrance
  • 102: Exit Cave dark hole, etc

Email photographs to: editor@cavesaustralia.com

Do not title images with their captions. Instead, please supply a list at the end of the article with the image name or number followed by the caption. The shorter the caption, the better.

GRAPHICS

The acceptable formats for graphics include:

  • PNG, JPEG or TIFF; colour is always preferred. Very large and/or detailed maps should be supplied in PDF format for a separate optional download.
  • Images scanned at 300dpi
  • Mono GIFs

Where you submit maps, please erase or omit GPS or other data which might too closely identify a location. The reasons for this should be obvious.

VIDEOS

Short videos are now acceptable for Caves Australia. They should be under 1-minute in length in .avi or .mov format.

Vimeo and YouTube links are also welcome.

AUDIO

We are still experimenting with the best format to use. Send in your files anyway (but keep them short) and we’ll see what happens.
